Correction: Texas Party Platform

September 4, 2007

In my just-posted column, “Hypocrisy as an Impeachable Offense,” I stated that no one is advocating the resurrection of sodomy laws. An astute reader has just informed me of my error. Apparently, the Texas Republican Party platform does indeed provide:

Texas Sodomy Statutes – We oppose the legalization of sodomy. We demand that Congress exercise its authority

granted by the U.S. Constitution to withhold jurisdiction from the federal courts from cases involving sodomy.

This provision will remain in this correction until someone else tells me the platform has been changed back. I guess I should have said — “No one I know is engaged in the quixotic exerice of trying to resurrect sodomy laws.” But had I said something of the sort, Congress would probably have kowtowed to the demands of the Texas legislature and I’d have had egg on my face anyway. Sometimes you just can’t win out there.

So, my bad. Or, to use a less hip cliche: live and learn.

I think I’ll step out in blind faith and stand by my statement that no one is advocating that video cams be installed in people’s homes. But stand by on that too. I have some alert detractors and I don’t want to get cocky, especially in light of this most egregious error.
