March 3, 2005Democrat, er, Republican Senator Chuck Hagel has announced that he will “unveil legislation to restructure the Social Security system” in an upcoming speech on March 7. What’s he doing “unveiling” anything, as if a lone Senator ought to be taking the lead on an issue his party’s president is trying to tackle with a major reform plan. If Hagel is trying to prove he is a card-carrying member of the John McCain wing of the GOP, he can stop now because he has already accomplished his goal. One might argue that Hagel has not been grandstanding with his constant opposition to President Bush, but when you throw in the fact that he’s giving speeches to “unveil” things, it’s hard not to conclude he’s in a mad dash for greener political pastures.
