President Promises to Halve Deficit in Second Term

November 22, 2004

At a press conference in Chile, President Bush promised to cut the deficit in half and reform Social Security and Medicare during his second four years in office.

No major commentary from me here, other than to say that it’s encouraging that the president continues to show signs that he intends to be a fully engaged, non-lame duck, energetic president who is committed to cutting back on spending and reforming entitlements. Very good signs.

Concerning President Bush’s approach to his second term and the climate surrounding him relative to this goal, Charles Krauthammer has an interesting column today arguing that because Dick Cheney will not succeed him he’ll have more freedom to implement his true agenda than most presidents who are constrained by the politics of re-electing their successors.
