Speaking of Liberal Disrespect for Blacks

November 19, 2004

Even if you don’t want to characterize some of these infernal liberal cartoons lampooning and demeaning Condoleezza Rice as racist, could we at least agree that white liberals treat blacks disrespectfully when they engage in such expressions? Don’t they just assume they will get a pass when they refer to Dr. Rice as “Aunt Jemima” and Secretary Powell as an Uncle Tom? What makes them think they can say such garbage with impunity?

Check out this Newsmax article reporting that a radio talk show host did just that. John Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM, apparently thought he was being cute on the radio this week. From the article:

A radio talk show host drew criticism Thursday after calling Condoleezza Rice an “Aunt Jemima” and saying she isn’t competent to be secretary of state.

John Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM in Madison, said in a phone interview Thursday that he used the term on Wednesday’s show to describe Rice and other blacks as having only a subservient role in the Bush administration.

These epithets are not only indescribably offensive, they are just flat out wrong in both cases. Concerning calling Powell an Uncle Tom, the article states:

Sylvester, who is white, also referred to Powell as an “Uncle Tom” – a contemptuous term for a black whose behavior toward whites is regarded as fawning or servile.

I realize liberals are now saying Secretary Powell was George Bush’s lapdog, but that is just absurd. He has been an independent force from the beginning, even to the point of disappointing some conservatives. But no one, other than vicious liberals, believes that Colin Powell is not his own man — and a very good man at that.

As for the slams against Condi, Newsmax reports Sylvester as saying:

As for Rice, “they’re using her for an illusion of inclusion,” he said, adding that he feels her history as national security adviser showed a lack of competence.

This is what liberals often say. The truth — as shown by President Bush’s long history with Dr. Rice — is precisely the opposite. President Bush has Dr. Rice on board because he values her expertise so highly. She would be there no matter what her skin color, I have no doubt. In fact I can’t believe I’m even dignifying this outrageous remark with a comment, but I feel compelled. And who are these people to suggest that Dr. Rice is not competent? That’s just beyond comprehension. She has more foreign policy credentials of any cabinet member since perhaps Henry Kissinger, imho. If society applied the same standards to liberals as they do conservatives, this host would be run out of town on a rail for suggesting that the manifestly competent Dr. Rice is not competent.
