Abortion Rights Poll

April 27, 2005

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll supposedly shows that a majority of Americans support abortion rights. I couldn’t find the poll at the Wash Post cite, but got it from Angusreid.com via Free Republic. I’ll give you the numbers and then make a few observations:

Here’s what Angus says the poll results are:

Polling Data

Do you think abortion should be legal in all cases, legal in most cases, illegal in most cases or illegal in all cases?

Apr. 2005

Legal in all cases

20%

Legal in most cases

36%

Illegal in most cases

27%

Illegal in all cases

14%

Summary: 56 per cent of respondents say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 41 per cent disagree.

In the first place, I’m not sure I believe this. From everything I’ve read, when the questions are asked properly, support for this type of murder has declined consistently and is now in the minority. But, if I’m wrong, what’s newsworthy is the degeneration of our society and its moral fabric, not some triumph for the abortion industry.

I just wonder what the numbers would be if you could accompany the questions with a video of a 4-D ultrasound of the baby in the womb prior to being aborted and then the details of its death also being shown. I think most people would be too decent to countenance the gruesome reality of abortion if they were not so detached from it and so desensitized by our culture’s sanitization and dehumanization of the issue. No one could hold a five month old baby like I did — after a terrible miscarriage — and advocate for “abortion rights” — or could they?
